Why Sound Healing Belongs in Every Workplace

Updated: May 28

How Borealis Philanthropy centered care—and what it taught us about rest and leadership.

In a world that rarely slows down, Borealis Philanthropy is doing something radical: they’re putting care at the center of their work.

Last week, I had the honor of closing out their staff retreat in Virginia Beach with a session designed to restore the nervous system. Through breathwork, guided reflection, and sound healing, we created a container for deep pause and integration.

As the vibrations of the alchemy bowls filled the space, a shift was felt—tension released, minds cleared, and hearts softened.

“This was exactly what I needed. I feel clear, grounded, and restored.”

This wasn’t just a wellness moment. It was a collective recalibration.

Why This Matters

Borealis Philanthropy is a social justice intermediary that funds movements led by Black, Indigenous, queer, disabled, and immigrant communities. Their team holds space for healing and change every single day. And like so many mission-driven teams, they also carry the emotional and energetic weight of that labor.

But who holds space for them?

This is the heart of Luna Serenity’s workplace wellness work: to offer organizations a way to regulate, restore, and reimagine their cultures through embodied, trauma-informed practices.

The Science Behind Sound Healing

Sound healing isn’t just calming—it’s scientifically supported as a tool for stress reduction and nervous system care:

  • A 2016 study published in the Journal of Evidence-Based Integrative Medicine found that singing bowl sound meditation significantly decreased tension, anxiety, and depressed mood while improving spiritual well-being. Read the study here.

  • Psychology Today reports that sound therapy can activate the parasympathetic nervous system, which reduces cortisol and supports a “rest-and-digest” state. Explore the article.

What Borealis Modeled for Us All

By closing their retreat with sound and stillness, Borealis modeled something we all need to remember:

Rest isn’t the reward for work—it’s what sustains it.

They reminded us that wellness isn’t a perk. It’s the foundation of resilient, values-aligned leadership.
